Earning XP
How Steps are worth XP, when it is released, and where to see it.
XP (experience points) is how Questify recognises delivered work. Heroes earn it by moving Steps forward and finishing Quests; Council members earn it when their Quest completes. XP raises your level.
What a Step is worth
Every Step has an XP value, set when it is created:
Step XP = Complexity weight × Effort weight × Base multiplier × Priority weightWith the default settings:
| Input | Values |
|---|---|
| Complexity | Simple 1, Moderate 2, Complex 3 |
| Effort | Small 1, Medium 2, Large 3 |
| Base multiplier | 10 |
| Priority (from the Quest) | Lowest 1.0, Low 1.5, Medium 2.5, High 4.0, Highest 6.0 |
Example
A Moderate, Medium Step on a High priority Quest: 2 × 2 × 10 × 4.0 = 160 XP.
If effort or complexity is edited later, the value is recalculated, but XP that has already been released is never taken back. The weights are configured in the XP Engine.
When XP is released
A Step’s XP is paid out in two gates:
Released automatically as the Step moves forward:
- 30% when development starts,
- 40% when it reaches review / QA,
- 30% when it is done.
Each stage pays once, to the Hero holding the Step at that moment.
Released by the King when the Quest is completed. The King sets the amount in Set XP Release Amount, up to the full pool.
Statuses such as To Do or Blocked release nothing.
XP for Council work
When a Quest is completed, each eligible Council seat receives Council Participation XP: a percentage of the Quest’s total XP (30% per role by default). It is added on top; it is not taken from the Heroes.
XP penalties
Bugs traced back to your work can reduce your XP when the Quest completes. See Bug governance.
Where to see your XP
- The Vault → XP Activity History: every credit and debit, with its source (Jira Gate, Questify Gate, Council Participation, Bug Penalty, Manual Adjustment). Filter by source, direction and date.
- Step details → XP tab: what a single Step has released.
- Dashboard: your total XP, your Vault balance and your leaderboard rank.
Leaders can audit XP across all Heroes on the XP Activity page.
