Allocating your time

Split a stopped session across the Steps you worked on.

A stopped timer session doesn’t count yet. You allocate it: you say which of your Steps the minutes went to. Only allocated time appears in reports, and it is what development and testing totals are made of.

The Allocate this session panel

It opens when you stop the timer. The timer runs on no Quest, so the panel first asks Which quest was this time for?: click Choose quest and pick it. See Stop the timer.

The panel then lists the Steps assigned to you on that Quest, each with a slider and a minutes box. Picked the wrong Quest? Click Change quest next to its name. Your split so far is cleared, because a different Quest has different Steps.

Give each Step its minutes

Drag the slider or type the minutes. The footer shows Remaining to allocate: X of Y.

Optionally move a Step's status

Each row has a status dropdown, so you can move a Step forward (for example to Code Review) in the same action.

Click Confirm

It is enabled once every minute is allocated, no more and no less.

If you hold no Steps on the Quest, the panel says so and offers Create New Step (assigned to you).

Rules

  • A Step can receive time only when it is in progress, in review, or done. Steps still To Do or Blocked show “Step must be in progress to set spend time”. Done is allowed so you can log the hours that finished a Step.
  • A status move from the panel can only go to an in-progress status. It cannot move a Step into or out of Done.
  • A Step whose status you change must also get some time.
  • Once a split has been sent for approval, its Quest is fixed: that Quest’s General decides it, so Change quest is no longer offered.

Sessions you haven’t allocated yet

If you close the panel or refresh, the session is parked. An amber badge next to the timer shows what you owe, for example Allocate 2h 30m or 3 sessions to allocate. Click it to open Pending sessions, then click Allocate on a row.

A session with no Quest yet reads No quest yet in the list.

A session can be blocked, for example when its Quest can no longer take work. The row shows the reason. In the panel, Choose another quest lets you give the minutes to a different Quest instead.

If a session stays unallocated for more than a day, you get a daily reminder: Tracked time is waiting to be split.

Long sessions need approval

A session longer than the allocation threshold (8 hours by default) does not count until it is approved. The panel shows This split needs approval before it counts. See Approvals for long sessions.
